Get Out of Your Own Way

Ego can be a positive force, providing confidence and enhancing our determination to succeed. However, when it goes in the other direction our ego becomes our worst enemy, misdirecting our actions and creating nonsensical issues.
I chose the above picture because it definitively depicts two distinct forms of ego on display. Bravado on the left, and calmness on the right. Both appear determined, but that will “come out in the wash.”
The movie Born a Champion has a scene in it that highlights my point. Both men’s ego were driving their actions, but in complete opposite ways. It’s not my place to say which character was correct or wrong in how they approached the situation. However, after spending four decades training in martial arts I know who I identify with most. Take a look.
My teaching philosophy is to learn how to control oneself to be confident and able to control others in adverse situations. Not just with our physical attributes, but with our mental and verbal attributes as well. Only when the latter fails to resolve the issue should the physical be brought to bear.
A major goal for anyone training in combat sports, or any martial art, should be to get out of your own way. Turn the ego off and allow the process to take place. Be there to learn how to be a better version of yourself, not to show how what you do or what you know is better than someone or something else. You’ll get so much more out of the experience.
Until next time.
